September 1997 - ABRAXAS UNVEILS 'FIRST LIGHT'

Hudson unveils "First Light" painting of Henlopen Light House
Abraxas Hudson of Lewes recently completed an oil painting of Cape Henlopen
Lighthouse which he has titled "First Light." The painting depicts the last
day of service for the light Sept. 30, 1924. (The light, built under authority
of the British government in the 1760s, fell into the sea undermined by
erosion in April, 1926. "1 painted from an angle looking from the auxiliary
light built to take its place," said Hudson. I studied a number of different
photographs to provide the details." One of those details is the Lighthouse
Service flag flying to the left of the lighthouse. Although this black and
white photograph doesn't show the intense colors of the painting, the scene
includes a dramatic sunrise pouring rich yellow light over the idyllic dune-top
scene. Many of those who attended this year's edition of the St. Peter's
Episcopal Church annual Sidewalk Art Show saw Hudson working on the very
beginnings of this epic painting. "I have over 100 hours of time in it,"
said the artist. He is shown here signing the painting for which he is doing
a limited edition of 900 prints. The painting will be on display at Framehouse
Gallery on Route 9 beginning Sept. 20. The prints, 18" by 29" and signed
and numbered, are available for $200. Remarqued prints are available for
$350. For further information contact Framehouse Gallery at 684-4829 or
